Laser Eye surgery (also known as Laser Refractive Surgery, Laser myopia, LASIK treatment, PRK treatment, Femto Laser Eye Surgery) and Cataract Surgery (also known as Cataract removal or Multifocal Lens Implants) are popular eye surgery procedures.
Many patients are looking for treatment abroad cause of high quality medical services combined to affordable cost. Greece has well trained ophthalmologists with a vast number of successful procedures in their surgical log.
At the same time, in Greece, high scientific level of those treatments is combined with affordable cost.
LASER EYE SURGERY
Laser eye surgeries are outpatient procedures performed under local anaesthesia. It takes 10-15 minutes for each eye to be operated. Both eyes are usually operated on the same day. Depending on the eye anatomy of the patient along with his wishes and lifestyle, most used techniques are LASIK, PRK and FEMTO.
PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) is a type of refractive surgery to correct myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism. PRK was the first type of laser eye surgery for vision correction. Usually it is preformed in cases of dry eyes and cases with thin corneas. PRK has some discomfortness for the next couple of days post-operatively and the patient has to stay in Greece for at least 6 days for an early post-examination by the doctor. Although PRK has a slower recovery than LASIK, it can be used in patients with a thinner cornea ineligible for LASIK.
LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a laser eye surgery that corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism. It is also known as iLASIK, UltraLase. LASIK eye surgery creates a protective layer in the form of a corneal flap. The surgeon folds back the flap and then removes some corneal tissue underneath using a laser machine. The flap is then laid back in place, covering the area where the corneal tissue was removed. LASIK method is very safe and has no discomfortness. With LASIK the acuteness of vision is been improved just minutes after the procedure. Among his advantages is the fast recovery, ideal for a medical tourist.
FEMTO is the latest eye surgery method. The femtosecond laser does the whole surgery in one step. The corneal flap is created the safest possible way without mechanical instruments. The precision and safety of FEMTO combined with the lack of discomfortness have made this method already very popular among the medical tourism patients.
Cataract is the leading cause of treatable blindness worldwide. Cataract means reduced transparency (opacity) and hardening of the eye lens that is normally crystal clear.
The cataract surgery procedure has two steps:
First, the ophthalmologist removes the damaged eye lens and second, right after he replaces it with an artificial monofocal or multifocal or toric lens. The procedure can be done for both eyes at the same day if necessary.
This eye surgery does not require general anaesthesia. Patients are discharged a few hours after. Patients are prescribed some antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eyewashes to be performed two to three times daily, during the following one to two months.
Nowadays, one of our most popular treatments is a cataract surgery with multifocal lenses to patients that have both eye cataract problem and presbyopia problem.
