Abortion is a medical procedure that ends a pregnancy. It seems as the only solution to confront with an unwanted pregnancy. Every year, millions of women decide to get an abortion because of health, economic or social reasons. Many women get pregnant by a partner who is not considered to be the appropriate person to have a family with. Others are not ready to be a parent yet because of their young age or other professional priorities (to finish school, focus on work etc). Women may also believe that they don’t want to be a parent or they want to focus their efforts on the kids they already have. Such decision is personal and all reasons should be respected. The decision belongs 100% to the woman.
When an abortion could be done according the Greek Law
The most convenient and safe time to end a pregnancy is approximately 6 weeks after the first day of your last menstruation. According the Law in Greece, women are able to decide and complete an abortion up to the 12th week of gestation, for any personal reason or up to the 24th week of gestation when serious medical problems exist. For this reason, the decision to have your abortion should not be unnecessarily delayed.
How an abortion is done
Abortion is considered to be a safe procedure. Before an abortion, you may get medications that help your cervix to open. After that, your well-trained doctor will use medical instruments and suction to remove the embryo from the uterus. The effectiveness is almost 100%. The procedure usually takes no more than 10 minutes. As you need to have a fysical and U/S exam and maybe few basic lab tests, prepare for the procedure, visit the cardiologist and remain for a short time in the recovery room after the procedure until you feel better and are ready to leave, the total time is approximately 1-2 hours.
After the procedure, a short course of antibiotics to protect from infections and painkillers to manage a possible minor pain, will be administered. Other preparations to protect woman’s uterus are also suggested. Complications after an abortion are rare. Recovery is quick. After the abortion, women can turn back to their daily schedule and obligations after few days and in some cases even the day after. For several days, weight-lifting, strenuous exercise and intense physical activities should be avoided. Women should also abstain from sexual intercourse and swimming should also be avoided. Bleeding is expected to last for few days similar to a regular period. Abortion is not expected to affect your ability to have children in the future.
